READING: MAKKAH METRO

Every year, millions of pilgrims come to Saudi Arabia for Hajj. To get to Saudi Arabia, they take planes. People from nearby countries, like Iraq or Jordan, also take buses or drive their cars. There are no airports in Makkah. Pilgrims drive to Makkah or take the bus.

The Saudi government built the Makkah Metro to help pilgrims move around the different sites during Hajj. Pilgrims take the train at a station on Umm Al-Qura Road, in Makkah. There are also three stations in Arafat, three stations in Muzdalifa and three stations Mina.

Using the train, pilgrims move around these sites in 5 to 10 minutes. Many pilgrims still walk, drive or take the bus, but the trains of Makkah Metro are the best means of travel during Hajj.
