CH:2 MORE ABOUT CPU    P:26-27

QUESTION NO.3 GIVE THE SHORT ANSWER OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS.

i- What is the function of a Microprocessor in a System Unit?
Answer:

FUNCTION OF A MICROPROCESSOR

Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the brain of a computer system. It controls all input and output connections inside and outside of the computer.

The functions of CPU are:

i.ALU

ii. CU

iii. MU

ii-             Explain the functions of ALU in Microprocessor.
Answer:

FUNCTIONS OF ALU( Arithmetic logical Unit)

1-    Arithmetic logical Unit (ALU) performs computation.

2-    The logic circuits of ALU can perform functions like addition, subtraction, comparison, increment, decrement or the like.

3-    ALU contains the data processing logic.

iii- Write a short note on Computer Clock.
Answer:

                 COMPUTER CLOCK

The computer clock is an electronic circuit that generates pulses at a rapid pace. It generates millions of pulses in one second. The pulses are reported as millions of cycles per second. The rate of generation of pulses is collected by the clock speed. This clock speed is measured in Mega Hertz (MHz) where Mega means million and Hertz means Time per second.

iv- What is the function of Control Unit in Microprocessor?
Answer:

FUNCTION OF CONTROL UNIT(“BOSS” of operations)

1- The Control Unit or CU acts like the supervisor on a loading platform- overseeing operations.

2- It makes sure that things are done in an ordering fashion.

3- This unit directs the system according to the procedure designed by its human operators and programmers.

v- Explain the following conditions with examples.

a) Less-than condition                             b) Not Equal to condition

c) Less-than or equal to condition d) Greater-than or equal to condition

Answer:

a) LESS-THAN CONDITION

In this condition the arithmetic logic unit analyses two or more values to conclude if one value is less than the other values:

Example:

If the number of telephone calls consumed in a month are less than 500 then the rate of per call is Rs. 3 otherwise the rate per call is Rs. 3.50.

c)NOT EQUAL TO CONDITION

In this condition, the arithmetic logic unit analyses two or more values to conclude if one value is not equal to the other value.

Example:

If the age of a person is not equal to 18 years then he is not eligible to cast
his vote.

c) LESS-THAN OR EQUAL TO CONDITION

In this condition.Al.U analyses more than one value to conclude that one value is less than or equal to another.

Example:

If a book” Quick Way to Learn Computers” has less than or equal to 3 8 pages then it is for class 1, otherwise it is for another class.

d)   GREATER-THAN OR EQUAL TO CONDITION

In this condition, ALU analyses more than one value to conclude if one value is greater than or equal to another.

Example:

If the value of a house is greater than or equal to 100,0000 (one million rupees) then the property tax will be implemented otherwise it will be exempted.

vi- Write a short note on RAM.
Answer:

RAM(Random Access Memor)

This storage device and microprocessor are mounted on the same board.
All programs are loaded into RAM.

When a computer is turned off or power fails every information or data present in RAM is deleted.

vii- How many Secondary Storage Devices are there in the System Unit? Write down their names.
Answer:

SECONDARY STORAGE DEVICES

1-    Hard Disk

2-    Floppy Disk

3-    CD-ROM

4-    Tape Drive

5-    Zip Drive

viii- Write a short note on Floppy Disk.

SIZES

i) 3.5 inches Floppy Disk
ii) 5.25 inches Floppy Disk

ix- What is the importance of CD-ROM in the System Unit?
Answer:

IMPORTANCE OF CD-ROM(Compact Disk, Read Only Memory)

1-    A CD-ROM is able to read data and programs that are
stored on CD-ROM disks.

2-    It may store a lot of information. A single CD may store
more than 700 MB of data.

3-    It is also able to hold many kinds of movies, cartoons, music
and animations.
