  1. READ THE BROCHURE BELOW ABOUT A VACATION IN COSTA RICA AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS 1-9. CHOOSE THE BEST ANSWER A, B, C OR D.

ECO-ADVENTURE IN COSTA RICA!

Join Broadreach Summer Adventures this summer and experience Costa Rica for the

vacation of a lifetime in this amazing rainforest. Your three-week adventure will include

outdoor activities such as surfing, scuba diving, sailing, ski kayaking, horseback riding i

and backcountry hiking. You will also participate in a programme to rescue Costa Rica’s

endangered sea turtles and learn from experts about these rare and beautiful creatures

and their environment. In the final week, you will board the Olive Ridley, a 40-foot sailing

vessel, for a cruise along the coast. Many surprises await you, but we can promise this: you

will learn skills and leave with memories that will last a lifetime.

GROUP LIFE

We maintain a group size of 10-14 individuals, plus two full-time group leaders. The small group size promotes teamwork,

cooperation, leadership and compromise. Our trained staff and the participants come together to make decisions about

activities that suit the goals and abilities of the group. You will be able to relax, be yourself and get to know and appreciate

others for who they are. In addition, experts in various areas will often join your group to offer training in the new activities

and share knowledge about the natural environments and local cultures we explore.

WEEK 1

The first week is for getting acquainted with your group and group leaders. There will be lessons in ‘survival Spanish’ and

local customs. We will then spend a week hiking through the rainforest, exploring the rivers on white-water rafting trips

and soaring through the rainforest canopy on Costa Rica’s famous zip lines. On many excursions, naturalists will join the

group to talk about the many amazing plants and animals of Costa Rica. Evenings will be spent relaxing in a campground,

where you will have a chance to learn some local recipes.

WEEK 2

In our second week, we travel to the island of Parismina to learn about Costa Rica’s amazing sea turtles. While on the

island, you will live with a host family in a local village and be immersed in the culture. Professional ecologists will

introduce you to the turtle conservation programme. Volunteers take short night shifts, where they monitor turtles and

collect eggs, which are then taken to a safe hatching location. A highlight of the experience is watching baby turtles hatch

and make their way to the ocean.

WEEK 3

For the third and final week, we will board the Olive Ridley for a sailing adventure along the coast. We will land in various

locations to explore and spot some of the wildlife, which includes monkeys, sloths and some of the world’s most brilliantly-

coloured frogs and birds.

REQUIREMENTS

Anyone in good health and moderately good shape can join this trip. We require that you take a physical exam before

registering. If you have a condition such as asthma, please let us know in advance. Experience in any of the activities on the

trip is not necessary; instruction will be given to the group by our leaders who are fully trained in safety procedures.

  1. READ THE EXCERPT FROM A MOUNTAIN CLIMBER’S JOURNAL AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS 1-8. CHOOSE THE BEST ANSWER A, B, C / D.

Getting down from the top of Mt Everest was probably the most ‘

difficult thing that I have ever done in my life. I thought that reaching

the summit would be hard, but getting off the top was actually harder!

When I started my descent, I was blind in my right eye, had blurred

vision in my left eye, and was concerned that I could not get my sherpa,

Dhorjee, to understand what was happening to me. lust minutes off the

summit, I caught up with Dhorjee who had retreated from the summit

due to the extreme cold. I continued to try and tell him that I was

having problems with my vision, but he still did not seem to understand f it and again walked away from me as he seemed intent on getting down  the mountain! I, too, wanted to get down the mountain, but knew that I would need help.

And then it happened; at the very top of the world, just below the summit, I fell! My foot became tangled in the safety line and I tripped and fell forward. I remember screaming into my oxygen mask, though the scream could not be heard above the roar of the wind. Panic, fear and sheer terror gripped my body as I fell onto the trail in front of me. Dhorjee apparently saw the fall and was next to me almost before I hit the ground. I lay there motionless, not knowing if one side

of me was favouring a quick descent into Tibet, or if it would be a trip back into Nepal. Fortunately, the drop to Tibet was a little further ahead of me, as I fell on a section of the trail that was actually forgiving of a fall. Dhorjee was already trying to sit me up and trying to see what was wrong. I took advantage of my seated position and removed my snow goggles to show Dhorjee a swollen right eye which was weeping and a left eye which was partially open and weeping fluid also. With the exposure of my eyes, it seemed like our communication problems were solved as Dhorjee immediately realised the situation I was in!

I would like to say that the trip down was much easier now that Dhorjee realised I had a problem, but it wasn’t exactly so. Dhorjee remained very close to me, but I still had to navigate the challenging sections of the trail. My pace continued to be quite slow as it took so much more effort for me to strain my good eye to see where to put my feet. Stops were more frequent on the way down, and I was starting to feel tired from the lack of sleep, nutrition and hydration. I barely made

it down to Camp 2, but upon arrival, I was treated to a fantastic meal and given enough fluids to sink a ship! It was great to be almost down the mountain, but I could not relax until I reached base camp.

In record time, and without incident, I made it to base camp ahead of our team. I celebrated the arrival with other team members and then further celebrated with the sherpas by giving away all of my daily mountaineering gear! They could not believe their luck as I gave away Gore-Tex jackets, down mittens, plastic boots, etc. I had made a promise to my wife that this was the final of the seven summits, and upon completion, I was done with mountain climbing. I felt it would be

wrong for me to continue to climb after I had made this promise, so I kept my word. Besides, I could use a break from high places as my fear of heights was definitely challenged on this trip!

Units (5-6)

  1. READ THE ARTICLE BELOW ABOUT FLOATING HOUSES AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS 1-6. CHOOSE THE BEST ANSWER A, B, C OR D.

Can you imagine waking up each day in a house that is gently rocked

by the movement of water, having a water park as a garden and getting 9 3 to work by water taxi? Well, for some people this vision of the future may become a reality. It is a commonly accepted fact that as the Earth’s temperature rises, the ice caps at the North and South Poles

will melt, causing the sea level to rise.

So, where does this leave the many countries in the world which I

have large sections of their populations living in areas which lie at Ir;

or below sea level? The Netherlands, for example, is one of the most mi

densely populated, low-lying countries in the world and has been battling with the problem of flooding for years. Further rises in the sea level would mean much of the country will disappear under water.

Inventive architects may have come up with a solution to the problem: a floating house actually built on the water. The basic idea is that houses will have a base filled with air and a way of anchoring them to the ground. This will allow the houses to float upwards whenever the sea level rises and sink back down when the sea level drops. So, are floating houses the homes of the future? For some people there may be no alternative; for others it will be through choice. After all, who says you have to live on dry land anyway?

1- Which of the following statements best expresses the main idea of the passage?

  1. Floating houses will be normal in the future. b. Eventually the whole world will be affected by flooding. c. Countries affected by flooding may sink.                                                          d. Houses built on the water may be homes of the future for some people.
  2. According to the text, why will the level of the sea rise in the future?
  3. because the world will become colder causing more rain b. because the ice caps will move and push the level up     c. because the heat will turn ice into water and force the level up                       d. because many countries are sinking and this will force the level up
  4. In line 3 what does ‘vision’ mean?
  5. eyesight b. image                                                                                                                                  c. Glimpse                                                                                                                        d. display
  6. Why does the writer choose the Netherlands as an example?
  7. The country will be seriously affected by a rise in water levels. b. The country has a low population. c. The country faces a housing problem.                                                                  d. The aim is to encourage architects there.
  8. Floating houses
  9. are based on a simple idea. b. will rise and fall depending on the sea level. c. will be able to anchor in any port.                                                                           d. are the only solution to the problem.
  10. How would you describe the general tone of the text?

UNITS (7-8)

  1. YOU ARE GOING TO READ A MAGAZINE ARTICLE ABOUT THE KING FAISAL INTERNATIONAL PRIZE COMPLETE THE GAPS 1 7 1N THE ARTICLE WITH THE SENTENCE A-H . THERE IS ONE EXTRA SENTENCE WHICH YOU DO NOT NEED TO USE.

KING FAISAL INTERNATIONAL PRIZE

In 1976, the eight sons of King Faisal bin Abdul-Aziz set up the King Faisal Foundation in memory of their father. ( 1) ( B  ) This is why the Prize is awarded to individuals whose achievements in education and Islamic religion make them stand out.

The King Faisal International Prize aims at inspiring Muslims to contribute to the world, but also offer their services to Islamic tradition and the Muslim world in general. To win the prize, individuals have to excel at one or more out of five different fields.        ( 2) ( F  )The other areas are Islamic Studies, Arabic Language

and Literature, Medicine and Science. The Science category covers the fields of physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology.

Every year, the selection committee announces specific subjects in the field of Islamic Studies, Arabic Literature and Medicine. Then, various international institutions and organisations nominate individuals who they feel meet the requirements of the Foundation.    ( 3) ( H  )

The next step is for the selection committee to consider the nominations. For all areas except Service to Islam the nominations are first examined by peer reviewers, who review the nominations and decide on the ones which can proceed to the next level. ( 4) ( A  ) They have the difficult task of considering each case carefully and providing the Foundation with reports, which are a closely guarded secret. The last stage is held in January of each year when autonomous selection committees made up of eminent international scientists and specialists meet up in Riyadh to discuss and make decisions on the winners. ( 5) ( G  )

It is the King of Saudi Arabia who awards the prize, so the honour for each year’s winners is great. But what are the criteria used for evaluating the candidates‘? Because it is a high profile award, the process of selection is very strict. ( 6) ( C  ) Among the winners of the King Faisal International Prize are His Majesty King Khalid bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Saud, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Saud, but also figures such as Tayyip Erdogan and many important professors from around the world.

Apart from being internationally recognised, the winners also receive a certificate which describes the reasons for which the particular winner has been awarded the prize. ( 7) ( D  )

  1. As a matter of principle, no nominations are accepted by individuals from political parties.
  2. According to the King Faisal Foundation, the first factor to consider is merit, or the quality of being especially deserving of an award.
  3. For this reason, so far, 223 individuals from 40 different countries have been awarded the King Faisal International Prize.
  4. The country’s third monarch, King Faisal, had died just a year before and was remembered for his philanthropy and his love for Islam as well as education.
  5. The text is written in Arabic calligraphy and comes with a 24-carat gold medallion as well as $200,000.
  6. The first one is called Service to Islam and is awarded to individuals who have somehow promoted Islamic culture and religion.
  7. Finally, winners of the Service to Islam category are selected directly by the selection committee and do not follow the process described above.
  8. This shortlist is then presented to international independent referees around the world.
